CLIFFORD BECKSTROM Clifford G. ‘‘Beck’’ Beckstrom, 84, 144 E, Michigan, died Wednesday. Son of the late Edward and Marie Beckstrom, he was born May 1, 1901, at Ironwood and attended Ironwood schools. During World War I he served with the Army 498th Arrow Squadron in France. He was a member of the Ironwood American Legion Post; Gogebic Voiture 40 etc; and General Pershing Barracks, Veterans of World War I. Mr. Beckstrom retired from Chicago North Western Railroad after many years as a maintenance man. He was a noted woodsman and trout fisherman. He was a member and past wor shipful master of the Ironwood Masonic Lodge and a member and past deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, Ironwood. On July 6, 1935, he was married to the former Angeline Grasewski. Surviving are his widow; one son, Edward S., Crystal Lake, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Virgil (Susan) Landretti, Wausau, Wis. and Dr. Helen Townsend, Charlottesville, Va.; 15 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and two brothers, Ellsworth, Jamaica Plains, Mass., and Bill, Escanaba. The funeral will take place Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at McKevitt- Patrick Funeral Home with the Rev. John Horner officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home will be open for visitation Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to service time. A Masonic service will take place at the funeral Stock market turns upward NEW YORK (AP) — The stock market turned upward today, rebounding from the spell of selling that set in before the Christmas holiday. The Dow Jones average of 30 in dustrials gained 7.23 to 1,526.38 in the first hour of trading. Gainers held a 4-3 lead over losers in the early tally of New York Stock Exchange-listed issues. Union Carbide rose 1% to 72% in active trading. GAF increased the price tag on its hostile takeover bid for Carbide from $68 a share to $74 a share. Northern States Power also ranked among the volume leaders, up % at 514%. A 1 million-share block traded at that price, and another of 950,000 shares changed hands at 52. The NYSE’s composite index of all its listed common stocks added .34 to 119.59. At the American Stock Ex change, the market value index was up .46 at 242.95. On Tuesday the Dow Jones in dustrial average dropped 9.63 to 1,519.15, bringing its loss for the first two sessions of the week to 23.85 points. Declines outpaced advances by about 9 to 5 on the NYSE. Big Board volume totaled 78.30 million shares, against 107.89 million in the previous session, home at 7 p.m. Friday. Ray Schiltz HIBBING, Minn. — Ray W. Schiltz, 54, Hibbing, native of Wakefield, died Monday at Duluth, Minn. A son of Mrs. Marie Schiltz, Wakefield, and the late William Schiltz, he was a 1949 graduate of Wakefield High School. He taught social studies at Hibbing Lincoln Junior High School. In 1964 he lectured for NASA and for a time was civil defense director for St. Louis County, Minn. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Hibbing, and the Minnesota Education Association. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn; one son, Kevin, St. Anthony, Minn; two daughters, Karlyn and Gretchen, Hibbing; one granddaughter; and one brother, Robert, Lombard, II]. The funeral will take place Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Hibbing, and burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hibbing. Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing, is in charge of arrangements. Donald Duckart SUN CITY, Ariz. — Donald Duckart, Sun City, formerly of 630 Cary Road, Hurley, died Dec. 25. Cremation will take place at Sun City. A complete obituary will be published. Mrs. Arthur Thomas Mrs. Arthur H. Thomas, 47, 336 E. Cloverland Dr., died Tuesday The former Elaine S. Matiska was born Feb. 16, 1938, in Ironwood Township. She graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1956. She was employed in local restaurants, most recently at the Ironwood Big Boy. On May 2, 1968, he was married to Arthur H. Thomas at Lewiston, Idaho. Her father, Albin Matiska, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband; one son, James D. Sutherland, Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. James (Kathy) Toth, Woodruff, Wis.; four grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Jacob (Helmi) Tillman, Bessemer; seven brothers, Henry, Denver, Colo., Kino, Bessemer, Roy, Silver Bay, Minn., Robert and Jerry of Jackson, John, Minneapolis, and Harold, Ironwood; and eight sisters, Nancy, Flint, Mmes, Virginia Bjork, Elk Mountain, Wyo., Sonia Lucente, Fairmount, W. Va., Donald (Ellen) Swanson, Toledo, Ohio, Carl (Marian) Osterholm and Ed (Shirley) Keranen, Jackson, Forrest (Ruth) Osterholm, Silver Bay, Minn., and Marlene Lehman, Denver. Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Allward officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. The funeral home will be open for visitation from 5 to 8 to eight and Friday from 9 a.m. to service time. Pallbearers will be brothers of the deceased
