^ Violations of the Factory Act.—Mr.Graham, Sub-inspector of Factories under Air. Leonard Horner, having on Friday received intimation that a number of mill-owners in Glossop-dale, Derbyshire, were constantly violating the Factories Act by working 41 females and young.persons ” before six in the morning, and not only beyond six in the evening, but actually as late as half-past seven o’clock, he proceeded to that neighbourhood in the evening for the purpose of making a personal inspection of the mills. He delayed his arrival purposely till a late hour, fearing that warningwould otherwise reach the suspected parties in time to enable them to defeat his plans. He reached the first mill at half-past seven o'clock, but found that at that hour the women and young persons had'left. He then went to the mill of Air. John Wood, where more than a thousand persons are employed, and came upon them in a state of great confusion—numbers of women and young persons hastily putting on their outer clothes and quitting the rooms at that late hour.
