Custom brings candles down Jan. 2.Old Salem, the Colonial-town part of modern, bustling Winston-Salem, N.C., makes Christmasa thing of beauty and joy, something never to be forgotten by those who have visited the old town during the holidays. And its holiday chores are nearly finished. The Moravian putz, an elaborate arrangement of miniature buildings, trees, people and animals, has been dusted off and repaired and will go on public display soon. Ladies of the community are busy making the swreet-scented candles which will be used in th? impressive ‘‘Christmas Love Feast. Thousands upon thousands of tapers are coming from the moulds that have been used for 150 years and more Home craftsmen also are busy making many-pointed Moravian stars w?hich w'ill hang in doorways of thousands of homes. The star, imported to Salem from Saxony when the American community wfas settled over 150 years ago, glow's brighter now because electric lights have replaced candles for illumination. The hollow star is of an elaborate geometric shape, with its 32 points divided evenly through three dimensions and tapering gracefully to points.
