AN ATTORNEY'S CLERKThe documents and other valuable matter which we had the opportunity o£ perusing traced the subject of the quest in England when, as James Matthew Evering-ham, he was employed by a Mr, Clements as an attorney's clerk, J-Ic was barely 15 years of age at the time. Doing odd jobs within the environs of the London dockyards fur some lime afterwards, lie then set sail In the ship Scarborough for Botany Bay, as Matthew Everingham, arriving on the morning of January 19th, 1788* Later as Matthew James Everingham, he received a grant of land at ‘‘The Ponds,M Parramatta, previous to which he married Elizabeth Rhymes, by whom he had a family of suns and daughters. Later becoming District Constable and Exciseman, he was very zealous in the execution of his duty, but his energies were brought to an untimely end sit the early age of 48, by drowning.His widow later married again, her second husband being Patrick McGaliy, and she lies buried at Knight's Retreat Farm, ♦Sackvllle Reach. Matthew James Everlng* ham was laid to rest in St. Johns Church of England cemetery, at Wilberforce, and alongside of him is buried one of his granddaughters.There were three sons and one daughter of the Everingham family* the subject of the London inquiries. These were James Matthew, Gilbert and Charles, the daughter's name being unobtainable. Gilbert emigrated to America, while Charles died earlyin life, being only a young unmarried man at the time.GILBERT'S GRANT
