What will 1931 bring! ‘The year just ended will go down in historys one of the hard years. economically speaking Everbody in the Unied States has felt the pinch, not of poverty but of “hard times.” Business has been slack, money hard in volleet, credits have curtailed, spending has been less, more people have been out of work, than at any time since the last great depression, which lasted though the year 1921. Yet there was little aetoal suffering in 1930, and the great majority oF people continued to drive their automobiles, to en joy themselves in much the same way as they were in the habit of doing. Most of us didn’t buy as many new clothes, but nearly all of us had just as much of the same sort of things to eat. Ac cording to Those who study those thing, more of us went to the movies in 1930 than in 1920. And when the calls came for help for the unemployed, we gave more money, to herd cash, for charitable purpose, than we had given it any year since the wary when everybody was “‘giving til it hurt,’ in short, “hard times’? as we have experienced them (a 1920, would have seemed like very good times indeed to the great ma jority of Americans, if We had at bed six years or seek detons prosperity just before as to distort one sense of values Nobody can foretell the future, but we doubt very much whether 1931 will come any closer to the Old-fashioned sort of “hard times’ with great masses of people everywhere god ured to be weary and starvation. In the long roo, however, one thing is certain. The United States of America will go ahead toward better and bevearer times than we have ever known. To believe otherwise is to bellews that the human race is going backward, and that is definitly not mne.
