Coralville Plant of Iowa City Light, Power Company Doubles Former Capacity Providing facilities to double its former capacity, the Coralville plant of the Iowa City light and power com pany, as enlarged by a $200,000 addi tion, is now in operation, and is working satisfactorily, said Carlton H. Myers, general manager. The extension was built to provide for a 80 per cent increase in the use of electric service. It requires a force of ten men to operate it. An addition of a turbine room and switch bay approximately 42 feet by 60 feet and 40 feet high was placed at the north end of the old turbine room. A connecting wing was built between this addition and the hydro plant. A new 4875 EVA, 13,000’ volt, 3 phase, 60 cycle, General Electric turbo-generator was installed, com plete, with new control switchboard and latest type of voltage regulator. The condenser, is a, Westinghouse 3,000 square feet radial flow single pass surface condenser. Special pro visions in the design of the’ turbo generator allow its operation’ on 400 pounds per square -inch pressure when additional boiler capacity is re quired. A 30-ton Whiting overhead’ travel ing crane was installed in the turbine room for handling the heavy ma chinery. A revolving screen was placed in a concrete pit in the head race at the circulating water inlet to keep the water free of debris.
