Rev. John Oechtering Is Selected fop the Fort Wayne Diocese.Mishawaka. Ind., dispach: The appointment of Very Rev. John H. Oech-tering to succeed Rev. J. H. Guend-ling, now at Peru, Ind., as vicar general of the Catholic diocese of Fort Wayne recalls an interesting fact in connection with the election of a successor to the late Bishop Joseph Rade-maeher. Father Oechtering was virtually the unanimous choice of the members of the elective board, but he pleaded with them that he be not recommended to Rome and even went to Cincinnati to invoke the aid of the archbishop in preventing his nomination as bishop. He declared his love for his parish, from which he said he could not separate himself, made it impossible for him to become bishop. Vicar General Oechtering is 58 years old and is recognized as one 1 of the most able and scholarly Cath* ! olie clergymen in the central states. | He is author of a booklet on “Capital | and Labor.” and also has •written and dramatized a number of elevating stories.
