LUKE G. SRESOVICH: The Inventor of the Desiccated Cocoanut Process. The beautiful city of North Ragusa, Aus tria, was the birthplace of Luke George Sresovich, who is now in his fortieth year. At the age of 11 years, accompanied by a relative, he started out to visit the various European countries. In 1866 he came to the United States in quest of fortune and after a short sojourn in New York proceeded to California. Here he began a course of study under Dr. Hoddard and afterward grad uated with honors from the Santa Cruz Col lege. He entered the wholesale fruit busi ness in 1870, and was soon obliged to enlarge his warehouse, to accommodate his increas ing trade. In the same year large shipments of cocoanuts overstocked the market, the fruit went to waste and many loads were thrown into the bay. Mr. Sresovich at tempted to prevent the waste by a drying process, which after several failures eventu ally proved successful, and the renowned “Pioneer” brand of desiccated cocoanut is the result of his experiments. It has taken the medals and premiums at all our State fairs and exhibitions, and was awarded a diploma at the World’s Exposition, held at New Orleans. Whole cargoes of cocoanuts are now received and converted into a de licious crystalline condition, defying time and climate. Several vessels are engaged in this trade, and an extensive export busi ness is being carried on with the South Sea Islands. Mr. Sresovich is a Mason and an Old Fellow and belongs to the Austrian Benevolent Society, the character and appearance of the build ings has been noticeable. New and substan tial structures have sprung into existence with amazing rapidity, changing and beau tifying the entire appearance of the city. Probably no one has been more potent in the accomplishment of this result than John McCarthy, the scientific brick-layer, whose office is at 321 Montgomery street. Mr. Mc Carthy’s work in this connection extends over the past twelve years, and he has aided in the erection of all the more important buildings constructed during that period. Mr. McCarthy has studied the art of brick laying in all its phases, from the manufac ture of the material to the formation of the walls. He is always abreast of the times, and is well-posted in the principles and de tails of his occupation. He is himself a skillful and experienced mechanic, second to none on the Coast, and although he gives constant employment to a force of over one hundred brick - layers, all work undertaken by him is performed under his personal supervision.Among the permanent monuments to his success and skill may be mentioned the following build ings: The Chronicle, the Academy of Sciences, the Rosenbaum, the General Keyes, Van Bergh Block, the new residence of Albert Gallatin, Mrs. Parrott’s business block on the corner of Sacramento and Davis streets and Senator Fair’s block at the corner of Oregon and Front streets. By careful attention to all the details of his business, by his integrity and capability, Mr. McCarthy has established a valuable business connection. Orders pour in upon him in a constant anal steady stream. His large force of workmen is taxed to its utmost to keep up with his building contracts and his services are in great demand by all who have in contemplation the erection of brick buildings. Personally Mr. McCarthy is an affable gentleman of good address. He has many warm friends in the city who take great interest in his business and who are gratified at his prosperity.
