Miss Jane S. Donnell of Kalamazoo, Mich., formerly of Bath, who is pass ing the Winter and Spring with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Strong, in Kobe, Japan, was recently chosen to appear as Miss America in the International Parade of the Kobe Port Festival which took place there a few weeks ago. All the foreign nations with representatives in Kobe had floats and there were others in the parade representing large business firms. In some of the foreign floats, those ap pearing were in national costumes. Miss Donnell as Miss America was the only American. The float was decorated with red and white chrysanthemums and she wore a white linen suit with a blue blouse and held an American flag. The parade lasted four hours. Miss Donnell is studying art, French and Japanese flower arrangement in Kobe this Winter. A son born Thursday to Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Bailey Lilly of Woolwich has been named Herbert Bailey, Jr. James B. Drake, who is a member of the faculty of St. Paul's school] in Con cord, N. H., arrived Friday to pass the Christmas holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Drake of Washington street. Miss Alice Johnson of Lewiston is visiting her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Miller. Members of Beacon Street Epworth League enjoyed a joke tree in the ves try Wednesday of last week. Miss Re bekah Miller acted as Santa's proxy and called the gifts from a prettily decor ated tree. Games were played and re freshments were served to about 30 by Miss Doris L. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lemont have re ceived invitations to the marriage on New Year's day of Miss Mildred Eliza beth Tripp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Chester Tripp, and Ernest Rolfe Steele, of Watertown, Mass. The marriage will take place at the Uni tarian church in Plymouth, Mass. Mr. Steele is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Steele of 808 Belmont street, Water town, Mass. They are frequent visitors at their Summer home at New Mead ows. A daughter was born Friday morning to Mr. and Mrs. John Pagurka of Bath. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Daley and son Frank Jr., Miss Louise Duley, all of Kennebunkport, and Mrs. Mary Kaler of Portland, have returned after a brief visit with Mr. Duley’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank L. Duley of Beacon street. Pupils neither absent nor tardy in grade 2, South street school, where Miss Dorothy Davis is teacher, were Betty Moore, Roland Dumais, Dick Callan, Miss Lucille Johnson, Miss Ellen Stevens, Miss Barbara Tubbs and Miss Martha Cutting, all of whom are at tending Westbrook Junior college, ar rived home on Saturday to pass the Christmas holidays. The students at the college have had a gala week with three offe-ach plays Wednesday night, a dinner and dormitory party Thurs day, the annual formal dance Friday night at the Hotel Eastland, and a children’s Christmas party Saturday afternoon. A birthday cake with two candles was cut and served with ice cream and crackers, Mrs. Coombs and Mrs. Harvey Groves serving the youngsters. Pine Tree circle, No. 826, C. of F. of A. held a Christmas party, preceded by an oyster stew supper, on Friday evening in the Red Men's hall. There were 20 present. Mrs. Edward J. Mur phy and Mrs. John M. Johnson had charge of the Christmas party, and Mrs. George D. Parshley, Mrs. Frank Dingley and Mrs. Alvert J. Gallant had charge of the supper. The circle will hold its next meeting on Jan. 8, when it is hoped there will be a large attend ance so that officers for the ensuing year may be elected. Mrs. Helen P. Mulligan and Mrs. Harold W. Child drove to Waterville Friday to return with Mrs. Mulligan's daughter Alice, a student at Colby col lege, who came home for the holidays. Russell M. Colby, Jr., 34 Pleasant street, and Arthur E. Hutchins, Jr., 32 Cherry street, left Saturday morning by motor for San Francisco, Cal. They will journey West via the southern route and hope to arrive in California before New Year's day that they may attend the annual Rose Bowl football game at Pasadena. Their stay in California will be indefinite. Horace J. Herrick, principal at Morse high school, is passing the Christmas recess at his home, Southwest Harbor. Albert Mullin returned recently to his home, 468 Washington street, from the Memorial hospital where he has been a patient for five weeks. Mr. Mul lin is much improved and able to see friends. Powell former manager of the Bath Opera House, will be interested in learning that Mr. Powell is in charge of publicity for the Western Massachu setts Theatres in their activities in connection with the Paramount Silver Jubilee for Adolph Zukor founder of Paramount Pictures. Mr. Powell re sides in Springfield where he is public ity director for the Western Massachu setts Theatres. Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Shaw re turned recently to their home in Pel ham Manor, N. Free Will Workers of Corliss Street church held an all day session on Dec. 16, some of the members meeting at the home of Mrs. Robert C. Mitchell, Weeks street, to tack two puffs, and others meeting with Mrs. Frederick P. Moffatt at the parsonage on Middle street, to cut and make robes for the young people's choir. The work of making the choir robes was continued on Thursday. Miss Martjia Cahill of Connecticut college, New London, arrived on Friday night for the Christmas recess which she will pass with her parents, Hon. and Mrs. Charles H. Cahill. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Pratt at tended the Golden Wedding observance of Capt. and Mrs. Fred McKown Tues day evening at their home on Eastern avenue, Boothbay Harbor. Arthur Eller, proprietor of Arthur's Lunch, 136 Front street, is expected to return to his home, 133 Front street, from the Bath Memorial hospital, with in a day or two. He has been a patient at the hospital the last two weeks. It will be some little time before Mr. Eller resumes duties at his business estab lishment. Miss Isabel Mackinnon arrived Sun day from Patterson, N. J. where she has completed three years training at St. Joseph'’s hospital. Miss Mackinnon will take her State Board Examina tions in January. Feere, ‘39, is among the University of Maine students home for the Christmas recess. Lorenzo Plummer of Lisbon Falls who has been a guest of his sister, Mrs. Oliver Moses, the last two weeks, left Saturday for Washington. He sails on Jan. 7 on one of the Dollar Line steamers for a trip around the world to be gone a year or more. Mr. Plum mer has been connected with the De partment of Justice in Washington for many years and has recently been put on the retired list.
