Although Atlas does not go the length of his namesake, and bear the world upon his shoulders, he displays a muscular power that would not have discredited the hero of mythology. Weight-lifting is to him a mere trifle, and tiie ladv is not a whit behindhand in grasping and raising “the white man s burden. Fifty-six pound weights are mere appetisers from which the pair go to the more solid pudding of hundredweights. Eventually Atlas bears aloft on one extended arm the fair Vulcana herself, who, although only eighteen years of age. turns the scale at thegenorous record of one hundred and ffty pounds avordupois. Vulcana then gives a really graceful and pleasing performance of the San-dow tvpe, a serious of muscular illustrations or physical culture.
