KUZZ-TV joins new Paramount NetworkBy RICK BENTLEYCa#fomtan TV editorOfficials at KUZZ-TV, Channel 45, have reached an agreement to become an affiliate of the new United Paramount Network.The latest network on the dial will launch Jan. 16.“We are very excited about being part of the new network and being associated with Paramount,” said Mel Owens, general manager of Buck Owens Productions.Contracts completing the deal were expected in the next few days.Since the independent station started six years ago it has not been associated with a network. Its programming has been mostly first-run syndicated shows (such as “Babylon 5” and “Thunder In Paradise”) and previously aired shows (“Beverly Hills 90210,” “COPS”). KUZZ now will offer two nights of original programming from Paramount with a weekend movie block to be broadcast Saturdays.Paramount Studios has been responsible for numerous film and television projects from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Cheers” to “Forrest Gump.”KUZZ becomes the 98th station to join Paramount, giving the new network 80 percent coverage of the United States. Other stations on the network include KCOP-TV in Los Angeles and KBHK-TV in San Francisco.The United Paramount Networklaunch comes at the same time the Warner Bros. Network has been signing up affiliates.The flagship steries for the Paramount Network will be the latest “Star Trek” spinoff “Star Trek: Voyager.” The series will follow the adventures of a starship crew as they travel back from a disaster that sends the vessel to a remote area of the galaxy.The series launches with a two-hour movie to be telecast at 8 p.m. Jan. 16.
