Sheriff-Elect John Davis receives ballistics training at Sheriffs Training Academy.Davis Attends AcademyDawson County Sheriff-Elect John Davis was among the group of 3S newly elected Georgia Sheriffs who graduated Friday, December 17, from the first Sheriffs Training Academy. The training was a six weeks course. The Academy is thought to be the first one of its kind in the United States.Governor George Busbee was the principle speaker for the ceremonies. He personally swore in the new Sheriffs and gave them their commission. They also received diplomas for successfully completing the course.The Sheriffs Training Academy-was the culmination of many years work by the Georgia Sheriffs Association, establishing laws and curriculum which will enable all newly elected Sheriffs to become certified under the 1969 Peace Officers Standards and Training Act. The Academy was sponsored by the Georgia Sheriffs Association and classes were under the supervision of the Georgia Police Academy. Governor Busbee lent the support of his office in securing the necessary funding from the Peace Officers Standards and Training Council and the State Crime Commission which madethe academy possible.Those men taking the course are to be commended for taking the time, often at personal sacrifices, to insure their county the best possible law enforcement available.During the six weeks academy and the 240 mandate hours required, the Sheriff-Elects have had courses in dealing with mechanics of arrest, crime scene security, jail administration, civil process, court room security, criminal laws, fish and game laws, the latest and most up-to-date investigation techniques and many, many other courses.
