By DONNA STUART Press Staff Writer The Carthage Humane Society usually provides shelter for between 50 and 60 homeless animals at all times. The scene is typical. A car drives up and the kennels come alive with barking, each striving for attention in its own way. A tongue, nose or paw may push its way through the wire, begging for a touch. A pair of sad eyes may watch your every move, looking for some sign of interest. In a corner sits a seeming unconcerned puppy, an occasional wag of the tail revealing its eagerness. Much credit must go to Mr. and Mrs. Tim Layne, who devote their time and love to unwanted animals. Managers of the Humane Society since August, the Laynes find many rewards in their work, and much heartbreak. The Layne’s three boys, ages 9, 8 and 4, enjoy living with so many animals. How many kids can boast of having 50 pets at one time? Although it is heartwarming to see the look in a child’s eyes when he finds a puppy under the tree on Christmas morning, Mr. Layne stresses that the age of the child be considered. Children over the age of five should be ready for a pet. Younger ones are not old enough to realize that a puppy or kitten may be hurt or killed unless given proper care. Christmas is a time of giving and sharing. Maybe this season will bring many unwanted pets into homes willing to share their love. Hopefully, Christmas pet shoppers will put the Carthage Humane Society at the top of their lists. UPPER RIGHT Happiness is a warm puppy, and when you multiply that times seven, you have more happiness than you can handle, as Stacy and Jennifer Jones, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Stan Jones, Press Sports writer, are finding out. The puppies, about 10 weeks old, are part Labrador, Irish Setter and Gordon Setter. The may be seen at the Carthage Humane Society. (Press Staff Photo by Bob Foos). These eyes seem to be saying ‘‘All I want for Christmas is a home,” and hopefully this little puppy and her three brothers and sisters will find one.
