Wynne, Jr., president of Great Southwest Corporation, owner/operators of tiie project.Designed by golf architect (Ralph Plummer in association with Byron Nelson, the 7,000 yard, par 71 championship course is located in Grand Prairie on Highway 360 just across the turnpike from Six Flags.Over 18 months were spenton the project by Messrs, Plummer and Nelson who used all of their combined experiences (Plummer, 80 courses; Nelson, one of golfdom’s all-time great professionals), to design the finest and most elaborately beautiful new course in the Southwest.Wynne's standards for the design and development of the new golf course were placed on the same level as Six Flags, which he founded in 1961, Six Flags, within four years, has attracted over 6,8 million visitors from all over the nation and is now the most popular single tourist attraction in the State of Texas, according to a 1964 Texas Tourist Development Agency survey.Officials hope that GSGC will achieve in its own right, the success and outstanding reputation enjoyed by SIX FLAGS, Future plans for the GSGC include its active seeking of major professional and top amateur tournaments.About 170 acres of the 6,600 acre Great Southwest Industrial District were used for the site of the GSGC. The area was particularly chosen because of the gently rolling terrain, its natural beauty and prolific number of trees. In addition, Johnson Creek which runs through the site, provided Mr, Plummer with a-bundant water for a complex sprinkling system as well as five water hazards.Incidentally, the sand used in the rraps contains gold bearing ore which has been assayed at 54 cents a ton. Each trap contains about eight tons of sand -r an average of $4.32 worth of gold per trap.
