Clever Female Impersonator Aids In Solving Mystery in Play at Orpheum Today. MISS FREDERICKS TO APPEAR “The Hungry Heart,” Based on Book by David Graham Phillips, Comes Thursday. “The Clever Mrs. Carfax,” who really is a man, is to be seen at the Orpheum Theater for four days, beginning to day. The picture will bring Julian Eltinge, who is numbered as among the best looking “women” of the mov ing picture world. Pauline Fredericks will come Thursday for a three days’ engagement in “The Hungry Heart,” while a Mack Sennett comedy wil complete the bill. Eltinge’s ability to don woman's garb and look the part is the founda tion for the story of “The Clever Mrs. Carfax.” Eltinge, who takes the part of Temple Trash, a young college man, is on his way home for a vacation when he meets Helen Scott on the train. He falls desperately in love with her, although the girl refuses to pay any attention to him. Plotters Plan Robbery. Helen is enroute to the home of her grandmother, who is in the clutches of two crooks, Adrian, her so-called secretary, and Rena, the housekeeper. They had been planning to rob the old woman, who is ill, and Helen arrives in time. The couple decide not to wait, Rena urging action as she is jealous of Helen, because Adrian seems to have a fondness for Helen. They are open ing the safe when the old lady hears the noise and starts out to investi gate. During the struggle the grand mother is thrown against the edge of the safe and the blow nearly kills her. Adrian and Rena flee with the money. Helen is awakened by the noise and calls the police on seeing her grand mother helpless. Helen is accused of the crime. Her picture is printed in the paper and Trask, who has been unable to meet again the girl on the train, decides to help her prove her innocence. When all plans fail he sees a pic ture of himself dressed as a girl, a relic of his college days, and decides to impersonate a woman and try to obtain evidence. He learns that Ad rian and Rena have taken passage to South America, and he travels on the same boat. “The Clever Mrs. Carfax devotes her attention to Adrian and succeeds in gaining his confidence. Helen is on the same boat, which adds 9 Trash’s enjoyment of the trip. He finally ob tains a confession from Adrian, which is duly recorded, and when the hand cuffs have been attached he snatches the wig from his head and dashes down the stairs three steps at a time to find Helen. Pauline Fredericks Thursday. “The ‘Hungry Heart,” in which Miss Fredericks will appear Thursday, Fri day and Saturday, was written by David Graham Phillips, and provides the actress with a role that fits her. This particular story begins with Courtney and Richard Vaughan, just returning from their honeymoon to his old ancestral home. Miss Fredericks takes the part of Courtney Vaughan, and the development of the wife’s ef forts to win and maintain her hus band’s respect and love during a series of unfortunate misunderstandings causes the photo-play to show some of the best work of Miss Frederick's al ready remarkable career. “An International Sneak,” a Mack Sennett production, also will be shown the last of the week. Chester Conklin, Billy Armstrong and Esthel Teare will be depended upon to furnish the laughs.
