Cold war scaledown affects Alaska With changes in the govern ments of the Soviet Union, Po land, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, and Bulgaria, the US. military is cutting back its forces. How much that increases or decreases the military pres ence in Alaska has yet to be seen. Politicians and pundits have suggested both alternatives, including a scenario in which any U.S. infantry in Europe would be moved to Alaska, and another in which Alaska’s soldiers would be moved to the lower 48 and bases here closed. Gay/lesbian report cites harassment Seventy-one percent of all gay and lesbian Alaskans have faced discrimination, harassment or violence while living in the state, because of their sexual orienta tion. A report released in August by Identity, Inc. used surveys, public records and interviews in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Juneau and 10 other communities. The report also showed that hetero sexuals who were thought to be homosexual also faced discrimi nation. Clinic stops abortions, declares bankruptcy In May the Fairbanks Clinic responded to anti-abortion pick eters by announcing its physi cians would no longer perform abortions. One doctor left the clinic to practice elsewhere. Another performs abortions at a different clinic but keeps his practice at the Fairbanks Clinic. Shortly after its announcement, the Clinic declared bankruptcy. School bonds defeated About 6,000 voters turned up on December 5 to turn down two school construction bonds. Vot ers may have been scared by the hurried and haphazard way the Borough Assembly placed the measures on the ballot. Eight Stars takes over All-Alaska Weekly Eight Stars Publishing, Inc.
