Looking on at left is State Kep. opening eermonies ot the first annual Chester Greenwood Kiehard Morton of Farmington 11 1*1 Photo)Greenwood's furry idea handy as winter blasts Farmington feteFARMINGTON, Maine (UPI) Chester Greenwood’s bright idea became a necessity rather than an ornament as his hometown honored the man who invented earmuffs.Blowing snow and freezing cold Wednesday kept down crowds and put a damper on festivities But Farmington's 5,657 residents used the same Yankee ingenuity that Greenwood used to invent the cloth ear protectors and made the most of his day anyway.When the cold prevented a band from marching in the Greenwood Day parade, the local radio station played uninterrupted march music and parade participants used car radios and transistors to drum up a strutting beat.And the residents made ample use of the more than 700 earmuffs that had been sold in Farmington in the last 10 days.Town Manager Philip K Schenck Jr. said weather hurt Greewood Day, which was created by the Legislature and proclaimed by Gov Jamet B Longtar as an honor for the renowned earmuffs. which have protected ears of all sizes and dispositions from wintry chill and exposure to the elements But Schenck said snow was something you had to expect on the first day of winter and a lot of local people showed up We had a good turnout, considering the weather.'A flag with white ear muffs on a red background flew from the municipal building and about 50 people ran a race from Greenwood's former home to the former Greenwood Ear Protector factory, but the parade was the highlight of the day, he said.We had about 15 or 20 floats and vehicles. They were preceeded by a snow plow that was also sanding the road. The police cruiser wore big earmuffs, an ambulance had earmuffs and a local bank had a dune buggy with earmuffs,” Schenck said The band cancelled because of the storm since cold weather makes band instruments freeze So we had the local radio station play marching music and everybody played their car and transistor radios. It was also amplified through the public address systems of the fire truck and police cruisers,” he said We didn't plan on making this a big Macy's parade This was just homegrown and this was the type of thing that pulls a community together You don’t have a band so everybody pulls together to make up for it, he said.
