Ask by Letter Contribu tions to the Cohen- Driscoll Fund Leading businessmen of Boston issued a letter yesterday through a committee, asking for contributions to the Cohen-Driscoll fund. Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, A. Lincoln Filene and the Hon. Charles 8. Hamlin compose the committee on contributions, and Hayes Robbins is its secretary. The letter is as follows: THE LETTER “In behalf of the families of Edward Cohen and Dennis D. Driscoll, victims of the tragedy at the Massachusetts State House, Dec. §, 1907. “Boston, Dec. 21, 1907. “Dear Sir—The following letter has been sent out by the labor friends and associ ates of the two victims of the shocking tragedy at the State House, Dec. 6th: “‘While waiting for a conference with Governor Guild on Thursday, Dec. 5, 1907, Edward Cohen, president of the Massa chusetts State Branch, A. F. of L., was fatally shot, and Dennis D. Driscoll, sec retary-treasurer of that body, was dan gerously wounded by bullets from a re volver wielded by an irresponsible party. “Both these men devoted their lives to the betterment of humanity and especial ly to improving the conditions under which the wage-earners are compelled to live and work. “Both were workingmen, actively en gaged in their chosen trades, and both have large families who were dependent upon them for support. Shut down with out a moment’s notice, it behooves every wage-earner who is in sympathy with the aims and objects of bettering the condi tion of the workers to come to the as sistance of those who have been ruthless ly bereft of a father’s love and care. The Massachusetts State Branch of the A. F. e.c. and the Boston Central Labor Union have decided to secure a testimo nial for the families of the dead presi dent and injured secretary-treasurer. “While the movement to raise this fund naturally and properly begins with the immediate friends of Mr. Cohen and Mr. Driscoll, there are strong special reasons why many others should do something in this unusually sad case. Both men have been for years strong forces for conser vative, reasonable action, and the com munity owes much to their wise counsel and influence in behalf of peaceable rath er than destructive methods in the hand ling of differences between employers and employees, “Their work has been entirely without material reward from any source, but given out of their own time and strength in the belief that the methods they stood for were in the best interests of their fellow-workingmen and of the communi ty. “Mr. Cohen was a member of the Mas sachusetts Commission on Commerce and Industry which is to report at this win ter’s session of the Legislature. “The calamity which overtook them might have befallen any of us, in any of the public places this maniac visited, but it happened to fall upon men and families least able to sustain the distressing con sequences. A number of contributions are already in hand, and have been acknowledged in the published reports of the fund. We trust you will also feel disposed to do something, whether the amount be large or small. Yours very truly, “THOMAS B. FITZPATRICK, “A. LINCOLN FILENE, “CHARLES S. HAMLIN, “Committee on Contributions, “HAYES ROBBINS, “Secretary of Committee, “101 Tremont street, Boston, Mass. “Checks should be made payable and sent to Kidder, Peabody Co., treasurers of the fund, Boston, Mass.” The Conditions A total of $925 has been paid to Kidder, Peabody Co., treasurers of the fund. Other organizations and individuals have voted to subscribe $69 more, but the amounts have not yet been sent in.
