It has a membership of 52,000 and its headquarters are in New City. This great army of members are bound together into an indissoluble compact for the purpose of visiting the sick, assisting the poor and ^ needy, burying the dead, helping the widow and educating the orphan. To relieve the members in distress is thecardinal feature of the order. The members help each other, not with a feeling of pity, but with a consciousness that it is their duty to help—that by so doing they are performing an act of justice. In addition to helping its own members the order is doing a great deal of outside charity work. It set apart last year the sum of $12,000 to help Jewish hospitals throughout the country. One-third of the above sum was given to the two Denver hospitals. In the recent appeal for help to relieve the conditions of the Jews in Russia, by the request of the )- grand master of the order, each lodgeof the 400 lodges in the country, donated a uniform sum of $25, making a grand a total of $10,000.
