8p*oial Council Meeting.1 A special meeting of tbe City Coun cil was held last night for the purpose of taking action on certain matters per* taining to the fire service. The W a ter Works Company having failed to furnish pure and wholesome water, tho water was shut oft some time since, leaving the eity in a precarious condition, as the fire department was almost entirely abolished when tbe water furnished by the Water Works Company was accepted.Mr. Ed. Manter was made Superintendent of tbe fire department and duly confirmed by the Council. A telephone was ordered to be put in at the residence of the Superintendent of the tire department in order that he might be notified promptly in case of emergency.An ordinance, looking to eertaiu other changes in the management of the tire department, was given a first read* ing-
