St. Mel’s sizzling cagers made it eight out of nine on Monday afternoon of this week when they toppled Austin in the Tiger gym, 77 to 55. The Knight quint, which has won its first two Chicagoland Prep league starts, will remain idle until Wednesday of next week when they journey to Par is, Ill. to participate in the eight-team Holiday tournament. On the evening of Dec. 28 the Knights will open against St. Anne high school. St. Mel is the only Chicago area team in the tournament. In Monday’s Tiger tussle the Knights were down in the first period but forged ahead in the second period to stay. Top scor ers for the Knights were Bob Fields and Ron Smith who had 19 and 18 points respectively. Joe Welkomer topped the Ti gers in the losing effort with 14 points, all on long shots from his guard position. Last Friday the Knights edged St. Ignatius in a tough league scrap, 85 to 82. They were down by eight points going into the last quarter but rallied to knot the score at 82 to 82, after which they sewed up the game on two free throws by Tom Canale and one by Ron Smith. The Knights actually won the game on their deadly free throw shooting, connecting on 27 out of 32 for a terrific 84 per cent average. Canale scored 15 points to pace St. Mel to a non-league triumph last Saturday over Quigley South, 66 to 53.
