Salvation Army will begin giving away 600 toys, ranging from dolls to bicycles, Wednes day at 9 am. at the storage area in the old Ward's store, Third and Gregg, A. D. Meador, fire marshal, said today. “The response of residents to the giving of toys for underpriv ileged children this year has not been as good as in previous years,’ Meador said. Still, about 80 bicycles, 80 tri cycles, wagons and a number of other wheeled toys were turned in this year, he said, for fire men to repair for Christmas giving by the Salvation Army. Almost 300 dolts were turned in and repaired for less fortu nate children, Meador said. Capt. Bill Thomas of the Sal vation Army will go by a list of the families needing gifts for their children in distributing the gifts Wednesday and Thursday at the storage area, as well as the many cans of foodstuffs on hand. Monday afternoon A. D. Mea dor, fire marshal, H. V. Crock er, fire chief, and Hubert W Clawson, battalion commander toured the storage area, examin ing all the toys donated by the more prosperous residents, and found excellent repairs and paint jobs had been made by the in dustrious firemen who have been working on the toys since Nov. 15. “The firemen,” (six at the main station, six at the Eleventh and Birdwell station, and 12 at the other four stations) Meador said, “will work all day Tues day in order to finish the re maining toys for readiness Wednesday.”’ Even though the distribution of toys begins Wednesday, Mea dor said firemen will accept bro ken or unwanted toys at any ‘time to begin on next year’s repair program. “We don't have much storage area,” he said, ‘‘and we can't accept all toys during the year, but we don’t want people to think we don’t want them, so we'll try to find a place to put some of them.” Usually, about 150 bicycles alone are donated, and only about half that number came in this year, Meador said. This means that some children will have to do without. Nonetheless, the response giv en by Big Springers means that many children who would other wise have little or nothing under their trees four days from now, will have shiny, new-looking wagons, bikes, trikes, dolls and other toys, and hopefully, a mer ry Christmas MORE DOLLS DELIVERED Bring in 150 more dolls BIKES FOR CHRISTMAS Hubert Clawson checks bicycles DOLLS FOR THE NEEDY Firemen inspecting dolls
