From advance reports at hand, it is safe to predict that inside the theatre there will be more thrills to every minute, more gasps of amazement, and even more laughs than ever were registered at an opening of the usual nature.tain a camera record of the strange beasts, and ofttimes stranger savages, which have been driven by the encroachments of civilization to seek a sanctuary farther andin the interior of theThe picture, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Johnson’s camera record of four years stay in Darkest Africa, is •entitled “Simba.” “Simba,” by the way, is the native word for lion; and the Johnson motion pictures show the King of Beasts in all his gorgeous glory as well as his terrible fury.“Simba” is a veritable Noah’s Ark, only a hundred arks the size the great Leviathan evidently would not be large enough to house all the strange animals which were “shot” by the Johnsons.A few of the larger and more dangerous beasts, like lions, elephants and rhinos, were shot in reality, falling victims to the unerring aim of Osa Johnson, but special emphasis is laid upon the fact that the Johnson expedition was not intended for ruthless slaughter. Its purpose was to obwere in Osa let her aim husband, crankingfarther jungle.Only when their lives danger did the fearless drive, and so deadly is that never once was her Martin, compelled to stop and take up his own gun. They both had some very close escapes, and many are shown in “Simba.”To enumerate the thrills that “Simba” affords would necessitate tabulating practically every one of the myriad different scenes. Perhaps the outstanding thrills are the lion hunt by the naked Lumb-wa savages, carrying only slender spears as weapons; the stampede of a great herd of elephants, with one enraged bull bearing down upon Martin Johnson, who cranked merrily on, knowing Osa would be trusted to bring the brute down ere it reached him; the safariTHE NEWORPHEUMTIMES SQUARE OrDheum Circut, Vaudevillecrossing a stream that fairly teemed with huge crocodiles; the charge of a dreaded rhino, which was stopped, again by Osa, only a few feet away.“Simba” is not all there is to the entertainment.
