Prisoners. Who. Escaped From Naval Station Taken at Lake Forest-Tuesday.. ARMED WITH A SHOTGUN. Told of Robbing Freight Deput y Chief .McGuire, of Lake Forest Gets Reward. Jesse James Smith and William 4. Hawkins, who escaped from the brig or jail, at the Great Lakes Naval Sta tion, were captured yesterday in the woods near Sacred Heart Convent by Chief of Police Walter McGuire, Lake Forest. The “jackies” were in the brig for discipline. Nearly a month ago Haw kins and Bernard Hirshman fled from the reservation and stole a horse in Waukegan, but the owner, Patrick Hall chased them in a taxi and caught Hirshman.awkins later surrender ed. Smith was punished for some mi nor infraction of the rules. Overpower Guard _ Hawkins and Smith on last Sunday overpowered their guard and escaped. They solved the problem of subsist ence by breaking into the North West ern freight office at Lake Forest, where they obtained canned goods, blankets, a raincoat and a shotgun and ammunition. Then they fled to the woods. Commandant W.A. Moffett obtain ed information the boys were hiding near Lake Forest and notified Police Chief McGuire. The latter failed to find them until yesterday, when he got a crew they were camping in the woods. © Chief Seizes Pair The chief came upon them sitting about their camp fire. Hawkins leaped up and attempted to grab the shotgun. McGuire leveled a revolv er at him. The captives told how they had ob tained two free meals. “We told a hard lac tale at Mrs. Scott Durand’s Crab Tree Farm and got our dinner Monday,” they said, “This morning we went to Louis F. Swift's home. We told a maid if she would give us our breakfast we'd kill some rabbits for her. She fell for us.” At night the boys were back in the brig under heavy guard and McGuire was the recipient of a check for $50 sent him by the commandant. Patrick Hall of Milwaukee road to day was bemoaning his fate because he did not receive the reward. He was the man who captured the alleg ed horse thieves in the first place. He says he took the boys to the station and found that while the order for their arrest had been given by the chant it had not yet been sign ed by him. For that reason he was not allowed to collect the reward.
