FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS IS AP PROPRIATED FOR SUPPORT OF BOYS’ CORN CLUB AND $200 FOR TOMATO CLUB WORK—MANY ROAD AND BRIDGE MATTERS GET ATTENTION—CURRENT AC COUNTS ALLOWED The regular December meeting of the Board of Supervisors, postponed from Thursday, December 15, on ac count of the illness of Chairman M. H. Harrison, was held yesterday with all members present. The Board ap propriated $600 for agricultural dem onstration work within the county and authorized the erection of a toll gate between Harrisonburg and Peale’s Cross Roads, which is now a five mile macadam section of what is known as the Old Rockingham turnpike. Quite a number of road matters were disposed of and current accounts were allowed. The sum of $400 was appropriated for agricultural demonstration worth within the county during the next twelve months—to be applied to corn club work, etc and $200 for the Girls Tomato Club. Messrs. Turner and Swank voted to be negative on poth propositions. The State puts up dollar for dollar with the county to forward this work and all the mon ey is expended for instruction within the county. The Board voted to have the coun ty avail itself of the State’s road aid to the extent of $15,000 during the coming year, thus demonstrating that there is to be no backward step in the matter of road improvement. On the application of J. S. Turner, and others for the establishment of a public road across the lands of John F. Showalter, connecting the Broad Way and Sparta roads, the Board ap pointed as viewers Eli Brunk, John K. Meyers, Joseph G. Myers, Jerry Lineweaver and John Sandy. In the matter of the petiion of Phillip Miller and others, for a road from Paul's Mill toward Spring Creek, it was ordered that the land owners be summoned to appear at the next meeting of the Board, to be held January 1. It was ordered that for the pur poses of maintenance a toll gate be erected on the new State highway be tween Harrisonburg and Peale'’s Cross Roads—a four mile section— the tolls on the same not to be in excess of those authorized by statute on the Valley turnpike. This stretch of road is known as one of the best in the State. The gate in question, it is said, will be erected within the next two months. Those who con tributed to the construction of the road will be entitled to a rebate on toll. The tolls will not be in excess of those of the Valley turnpike, for which the statute provides the fol lowing tolls, to wit: Five cents for twenty sheep or hogs, and ten cents for twenty cattle, and so on in proportion for a greater or less number; three cents for a horse, mare, mule, or gelding; five cents for a two-horse wheeled riding carriage; ten cents for a four-wheel ed riding carriage drawn by one horse; and for a cart or wagon drawn by one horse, five cents for a wagon drawn by two horses, ten cents; for a wagon drawn by four horses, eigh teen cents; and for every additional horse, three cents; and for every en gin, machine, wagon, or other vehicle moved or drawn, in whole or in part, by steam or other motive power, six and a quarter cents for each wheel of every such engine, machine, wagon or other vehicle moving on the ground. On application of BE. S. Sheets and others for a change in what is known as the Old Furnace Road it was or dered that D.H.Liskey, a land owner, be summoned to be present at the next meeting of the road. In th matter of the application of J. H. Ward and others for a change in a road and bridge south of Mt. Crawford, a continuance was ordered. All magistrates, it was ordered, shall be summoned to appear before the Board January 1st to exhibit the receipts of fines collected by them during the last six months. Capitation taxes returned by the State Auditor to the county for the year 1912 were reported to amount to $3,183.
