A prisoner who escaped from the custody of a deputy on Dec. 13 turned himself over to officers at 10:22 p.m. Sunday, according to the Hocking County Sheriff’s Department. Dana Alan Bookman, 23, of 34820 Clay Hill Rd., is being held in county jail pending arraignment on a charge of escape filed by deputies. Bookman was accompanied by his parents and Chris Veidt, county prosecuting attorney, when he turned himself over to deputies, according to Deputy Bob McManaway. Veidt said he received a telephone call at approximately 9:45 p.m. Sunday from Edwin Johnston, a Logan attorney who had previously represented Bookman, informing Veidt that Bookman wished to turn himself over to deputies. Bookman escaped from Mc Manaway’s custody as the deputy was returning the prisoner from a trip to Dr. Jan Matthews’ office, 9 E. Second St., where Bookman was receiving treatment for a skin condition, deputies said. Bookman also faces charges of aggravated burglary, theft, trespassing, and breaking and en tering. He was being held on a charge of parole violation when he escaped Dec. 13. Bookman was rumored to have been in either Florida or Canada, but Sheriff Paul Hartman indicated Friday that Bookman was still in the county. Veidt said that Bookman’s arraignment on the charge of escape would be held today in county court. He said he was not able to contact Bookman’s attorney, George Luther of Columbus, as of 10 a.m. today.
