INDIANAPOLIS WP) — John J. Barton, 54, Indianapolis, who rose from trooper to major in the Indi ana State Police, today was named superintendent of the force by Gov. erncr Matthew E. Welsh. Barton, married to the former Lou ise. Fitzgerald of Dana, joined the State Police in 1935 when it was reorganized and two months later became a detective. He served in that capacity until 1943 when he was commissioned in the Navy. He returned to the State Police as detective late in 1945 and Jan. 1, 1946 became captain of de tectives. He became executive officer, the No. 2 man on the force, in 1955 and served in that capacity until Jan. 1957 when the state administration changed hands. Barton retired from the force in 1957 and went into private business. He is currently a member of the Marion County Liquor Board. Barton will succeed Harold S. Zeis, the former Allen County Sheriff who was named to the post by outgoing pone Governor Harold Hand ey. During his police career, Barton attended the FBI National Academy and the Harvard University Homicide Investigating School. The Bartons have three children, two girls and a boy. Barton said he would resign from the liquor board as of Jan. 1. “We only have one more meet ing,” he said. He said he had no plans for a ma jor personnel shake-up. “I think we have the best po lice department in the country,” he said.
