Whether the broken mast was a ruse to anchor to deliver the whiskey Is mere conjecture.life Saving Station, and Boatswain Van Nostrand of the Short Beach Life Sav-According to the stories told, Boatswain Tooker of the High Hill Beach ing Station, becoming auspicious of the mysterious craft notified the New York custom authorities. „Custom officials at once came here and made an investigation, finding that the captain' was short 400 cases of whiskey called for in the sailing papers. The captain said that be threw the 400 cases overboard during a storm at sea to save the ship.As the craft was of British register and no evidence was adduced showing that the skipper was dealing in contra-.baud goods, after havin# te«d th# ma*t thucapiatft was allowed to Con tin tie ohhis journey.No denial was made when Inquiry was made by phone to the High Hill Beaoh station as to the presence of the mys- ) tery schooner, the Informant preferring j that the details be given out by the!
