Man Charged with Trying to Influence Jury in J. W. W. Cases Still Held William J. Costello appeared before Judge Steele in district court this morning with a petition of a writ of habeas corpus for A. L. Carpenter who is in jail charged with attempt to crim inally influence jurymen in the I. W. W. cases. Attorney Costello argued that Carpenter was illegally held; that at the preliminary no crime was shown. He took a shot at the editorial policy of The Star-Mirror arguing that it was worse than anything Carpenter had done. The petition for the writ e was denied by Judge Steele.
