Dr. Graeme Hammond, of the American Neurological association, has been making some interesting experiments that are of importance as putting the stamp of science on certain psychic phenomena classed under the head of hypnotism. Dr. Hammond sees no reason why hypnotism should not be made a most valuable remedial agent in disease, if used by skilled and conscientious physicians, and not left to charlatans and fortune tellers. He himself lias cured persons of the smoking habit when it was injuring them, and after all other remedies had failed. In one case he hypnotized a patient and told when in this state that if he attempted to .smoke again it would make him sick. Sure enough, next day when tlio man tried to smoke ho was so sickened that he abandoned the attempt and was cured, “Soldiers and servants” make the best hypnotic subjects. Americans the poorest, because they are not used to obeying.
