I saw a streetcar covered by flames, human bodies lighted like torches falling out of it, rolling over the ground.” The doomed plane was sent from England Friday to take the students home from their school, the Munich branch of the Univer sity of Maryland, where last min ute going-away parties were held Friday night as the young people prepared to join their families all over Europe, the Middle East and on Plumas St. at Center. James F. Deaton, 16, of 258 Fairman St., Yuba City and Robert Cole Francis, 21, of 807 Fourth St., Marysville were drivers involved. A Yuba City police car, driven by Patricia Van Zandt, employe of the department, sideswiped a parked vehicle on the Osobine Foster Freeze Drive - in lot on Shasta St. at 6:15 pm. The slightly damaged car was regis tered to Dorothy Budworth, of 329 Bird St., Yuba City. Another “fender - bender” oc curred at 1:39 p.m. yesterday, at Plumas St. and Colusa Ave. in Yuba City. Drivers involved were David Allen Victor, 20, Ata Live Oak and Jo Anne M. Diotte, 28, 125 Percy Ave., Yuba City. A vehicle driven by Ethel Louise. Hall, 55, 214 Johnson Ave., Marysville, hit two cars parked on a used car lot on Ninth and B. Sts. in Marysville yesterday when she swerved to avoid hitting a car traveling in front of hers. The two used cars were 1960 model sedans, accord ing to Marysville Police Dept. reports. Minor damage resulted in an accident involving cars driven by Robert Leonard Harper, 23, 518 E St., Marysville, and Ar thur Donald Matheson, 50, 680 Sutter St., Yuba City. The acci dent occurred at 5:25 p.m. on F St. near 10th St. in Marysville, North Africa. Today the school was plunged into mourning. At Northholt Airbase in Eng land, parents of the students wait ed at home with their grief. A bus sent to the airport to meet the plane sood waiting tonight even after word of the disaster was re ceived. Heads Probe The Ar Force said Maj. Gen. Ernest Moore, commander of the 3rd Air Force, had flown to Mu nich to head the investigation. Ru mors said the uniform of a two star general was found at the dis aster scene but the Air Force said a major was the highest ranking officer aboard. The Air Force said the plane, C131 military version of the Con vair, had taken off from the Munich-Riem Airport outside the city. It was loaded with students who attend a school operated by the American military as a branch of the University of Mary land. Plane Wobbles The plane wobbled in its foggy takeoff and veered toward the center of the city. It clipped the cross on the steeple of a church and then plummeted into the streetcar. The flames spread to several nearby houses. Cries of the injured filled the air as police mobilized emergency squads and sent them to the area near the main railroad station, an area jammed with Christmas shoppers and persons heading for ski weekends in the Alps. Automobiles were strewn across the street like toys, bent, twisted and burning. The U.S. Air Force said the plane was bound for Northolt A.F.B. in England and had been sent to Munich Friday to pick up the passengers. A spokesman said he believed all the passen gers were children. Another Air Force spokesman said the senior officer on the crashed plane was a major, but he said no casualty list would be issued until next of kin have been notified. The crash occurred at 2:10 p.m. (8:10 a.m. EST), the height of the busy shopping time in the area packed with stores and big hotels. An eyewitness at the Munich railway station said the plane hit the cross atop the spire of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, a land mark for Bavaria, and smashed into two houses before hitting the street car.
