MIAMI. (Al) — A slender, be spectacled 19-year-old Negro was in serious condition in a local hospital today — his bid to assassinate Cuban Premier Fidel Castro a failure. William Stoner, of Mercers burg, Pa., was felled yester day by one shot from a high powered rifle in the hands of a Miami Beach police officer riding the bow of a Coast Guard vessel. $15,000 YACHT Stoner had hijacked the $15, 000 yacht Sandona at Miami Beach and ordered the captain and mate at gunpoint to take him to Cuba. Coast Guard ves sels and a helicopter converg ed on the stolen craft but Ston er forced Capt. Ernest R. Glad hill and mate Jack Harrington to keep on going. Police said Stoner was hold ing a pistol to the head of Har rington, and when he waved it at one of the patrol boats, Of ficer William Leary, 33, an ex pert marksman, fired through a port hole. The bullet hit Stoner in the shoulder. CHARGES Miami Beach police said Stoner was charged with grand larceny of a boat. An investi gation was continuing and Mi ami Beach detectives said fed eral charges may be filed. But the FBI in Miami said it was not taking an active part in the investigation. Gladhill said Stoner boarded his boat and brandished a sil ver-plated .38 caliber pistol and ordered the craft out to sea. Gladhill quoted Stoner as saying “they got two of my buddies down in Cuba. Castro killed them. I'm going down there and kill Castro.”
