One of sci-fi’s founding fathers, Bradbury has seen a lot of technology come and go since his talcs about the red planet hit bookstore shelves in 1950. But he steadfastly refuses to surrender his life to the whims of a silicon chip.“Computers arc for researchers. I’m a short story writer,’’ he said.Someone gave me one years ago and it made mistakes and I don’t, so 1 got rid of it. You don’t need a computer if you don’t make mistakes. I can out-type anyone on any computer in the country.”To say that Bradbury is still going strong at age 75 is an understatement. He continues to write“ and speak — with the same enefgy as when the century was (uilf half over, when his storiesabout contact w ith life on Mars sci* *a new writing standard for thegenre. And now there’s “Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles Adventure Game” (Byron Prciss Multimedia, about $50retail). It’sa spooky, puzzle-packed jauntthrough a oncc-proud Martian city after its inhabitants arc wiped outby Earth visitors hearing killer germs like the flu and commoncold.Rich graphics, an unnerving sense of isolation and sudden appearances by ghostly images of the extinct Martians capture themood of the original.“It’s quite lovely. I think the landscapes, architectural renderings and the atmosphere arc quite beautiful.” Bradbury said of the game he saw demonstrated on vomcNKly elsc’s machine. “1 hoseadaptations arc accurate, to theword.”In the Nxik, intertwined stories tell of Earth colonizers destroying an idyllic Martian civilization. It has been published in 30 languages and was made into a TV miniscrics. In tlic game, explorers combalien ruins, check out a Martian flying sand yacht and match’wits with the evil Dr. Stcndahl to gather the broken bits of an off-world crystal key that will open The Archive and ultimately reveal the greatest power in the universe.Much of tlx: development effort went into showcasing classic passages from “The Martian Chronicles.” Almost every room has some kind of vicwscrccn lights up, when properly activated.with animated graphic sequences and a voice reading tracts from the book. The game, playable off the same disk in both Windows and Macintosh machines, is fairly difficult, featuring math and reasoning problems aimed at the high-IQ set. A complete hint sheet is included to help anyone who gets stuck, though.Besides the CD-ROM game’s compelling quest, Bradbury fansget to personally meet the writer via a menu of video clips in which he discusses his work, personal beliefs and other topics. The writer of dozens of booksincluding “The Illustrated Man,” “Fahrenheit 451,” “Dandelion Wine and “R Is for Rocket’’ took a hands-off approach with the computer game project.“When I get involved in a thinglike this, I stand back.” Bradbury said in an interview from his LosAngeles home. “I say, ‘OK, go ahead. Do what you do.”It was especially easy to let go this time because of Bradbury’s longtime relationship with software and print publisher Byron Prciss, who previously issued an illustrated version of the writer’s “Dinosaur Talcs,” as well as “Ray Bradbury Comics” and “The Ray Bradbury Chronicles.”
