Mrs. John Engle Would Kill Herself and Children. Sad Case: Brought to the Notice of the Hu smane’ Safety--Poison’ Taken “Away so From the Woman, Mrs. John Engle, who lives near the McKinnie farm, has been suffer ing from a nervous affliction which has made her irresponsible for her actions the past few days. On Sun day the lady made up her mind to die and she decided to end her own life and that of her children by tak ing arsenic. She accordingly sent her ten-year-old daughter to the nearest drug store to procure twenty cents’ worth of the deadly drug, oh the pretext of using it to kill rats. The little one procured the poison and gave it to her mother. Mrs. Engie communicated her in tention to her brother, Mr. Bever stine, who came in great haste to the city and notified Sheriff Melch ing. Deputy Sheriff Bix was de tailed to investigate the case, and when he visited the home he found Mrs. Engle in great nervous excite ment. She had the poison on her person, but refused to give it up. Humane Officer Schlaudroff and Dr. Drayer were sent for and finally the lady was induced to hand over the poison, the officers threatening to take her children from her unless she complied, Mrs. Engle was given medicine to relieve her condition and she will probably not attempt again to enact a tragedy. She has three children, the eldest being ten years and the youngest eight months.
