Aa waa fitting to such an occasion tho programme consisted for the moat part of claaale and operatic compositions, and waa carried through by the Seat amateur and professional musicians of the city, including several of the Montague-Turner Open Company. It may fairlv be said that no previous entertainment ha* been so high-dsa and yet eo much appreciated andeo successful. The first pert opened with a piano duet from “ William Tell, whiah was_iven with excellent execution by Horr Stance and Mr. W. R. Pybus. Mr. N. P. Lcnanan followed with Welling'* “ Forgive and Forget,” and gave a pleasing rendition of the ballad. Madame Thayer then appeared, and was accorded a warm greeting. Herfirat number was a song. Divided, com posed especially for toe oocaaion by theGovernor Sir William Robinson. The composition I* tuneful and melodious, and denotes muslcanly qualities of tW highest order. The theme is elaborated most artistically, and tho concluding movement is not only sympathetic, hut positively brilliant and exacting. It was riven with refined expression by the contatrice, who at the conclusion was determinedly encored. ^She gave,t ln_ response,— ____ Swiss Echo wherein therange, the sweetness, and the cultivation ofher voice woro displayed to the greatest ad vantage, all the elaborate intricacies of themusic being followed with artistic effect. Warwick Galnor in an aria '* KrI tu, from “ Un Ballo in Maschcra” was most satisfactory. He was in excellent voice, and in ns]ionse to a rooall he sang a serenade from Sir W. Macfarren'a ojieia Slee|«r Awakened, for which he was applauded. Tho next Item was a romance, “ Connate tu le |»ayit from “ Miynon” which was sung with grace anil expression bv Mrs, Brett Madame Thayer and Signor /.illnni concluded the first pa it with a duct, Perigi o care, from “ Traviata, the lady being particularly conspicuous in this number. After a short Interval l’art II. was begun with one of Beethoven’s sonatas by Mr. Pybus. A cavatina, “ Bel Rx«tio lusinghier1 from Rossini's Semiraroide1 was givenby Miss Helen Gordon, and in answer to un im-iterative encore she sang “ Sing sweet Bird, both efforts being characterised by finished vocaliani. Signor Squnrise played a concerto for the violin from “ Nonna on ono string. It was a beautiful nlcoe of Instrumentation, the manipulation bring extremely clever, und tho “ touch well • nigh jierfcct. Madame Thayer then gave the ‘'Carnival of Venice, ami again her cloar and flexible articulation of a difficult piece was all that could bo desired, and she was rewarded with hearty plaudits. Verdi's recitative roman/*, “O vecohio cor che batti, from “I due Foecari, was do-Uverod in fine style by Mr. Hugo Fischer, and Mrs. Brind and Miss Hose played a pianoforte duct by Macfarrcn, L Apimssioaata, carefully, and with nice expression. Mrs. Brett sang Soave I in magine in a pleasing manner. Of Mr. Nashit is almost unnecessary to say that he was in Sullivans ballad, “Tho LostsuccessfulChord. but it mav'bc mentioned that he -an as good os ever. .The programme was broaght toacloso with a quartette, Rigolotto. in which Madame Thayer, Miss Helcu Gordon, Signor Ziliani, and Mr. Fischer took part. It proved an excellent termination to a capital programme.Business remains unchanged In Sydney and Melbourne, and fair business is being done at many of the places of amusement. Mr*. G. B. W.
