Everything that relates to the pioneers of the county is Interesting, and as we glance through the sketches of our friend the recollection of more tbsn one old patriarch, of whose I'crsonal traits and characters wo h»d learned years ago, was revived in our minds-As a rule they were energetic, persevering, prudent, honest and God-tearing men, and they left a strong impression upon the settlements that grew from tho beginning which they marie :CuRinToniKR Srakolkr camo originally from More township, Northampton county, lie owned a farm east of New Berlin, Union county, and lived on it ihree years ; thence he removed to Brush valley in 1704 or 1705, and located on the place now owned by bis son Jonathan Spangler. He bought a Mr. George floor-mer's interest in a leaso for bis tract and received his deed from Miles for it in 1708, which showed that it was leased in 1701. Mr. Spangler built tbe stone bouse on the place wblcb to-day is still a substantial building. The subject of this sketch, Mr. Spangler, was a man of strong convictions, moral, religious and political, and fearlessly carried them out, caring little for popular opinion. The Sabbalh-breakcr and the tippler slunk awsy at his approach; the swearer and brawling bully subsided into silence as he passed ; all evil-doers dreaded his reproof. He wss an intelligent rnan and a friend of education, taking a very decided stand in favor of the common school system when that question was submitted to a vote of tbe people. Mr. Spangler belonged to tbe Lutheran church until about the year 1800, when be became a member of the Evangelical association. (See churches.) There aro a number of descendants in Miles and Potior township*, Centre county, and many in the west. Mr. Spangler was born May 17, 1766, died Ktb 21, 1866, and is buried in tbe Lutheran and Reformed graveyard at Rcbersburg.Sometime after Christopher Spangler moved into tbe valley, bis father George Christopher Spangler, original y from Prussia, came also and occupied the place n »w owned by Jacob Shulls.
