And now that the case is invested with a new interest by the tragical character of the ending, it may be proper to give a more de* tailed account of the affair than has hitherto been published, that the reader may judge whether the punishment inflicted exceeded the demands of justice.Scott was large, well built and rather handsome man, bearing the general appearaoce of an octoroon, but having a strong ticge of Indianblood. It was a week ago last Friday since be committed the crime for which he suffered tho penalty last night. He had been chopping wood on that day. During the forenoon he went to the house, carrying bis ax in his hand, and entered the room where the wife of bis employer was engaged at work. She is a small, frail woman, utterly incapable of making a successful resistance to so powerful a man. The circumstance of his coming into the boose with the ax, together with a flendish-ness of aspect always accompanyingthe contemplation of a great crime, frightened the woman. She apprehended mischief. Instinct told her that danger was at hand, and prompted her to defend herself. She held a butcher-knife in her hand.ingideithilt;weiSotcollbeg\exfcnotabahisIdoiout a cCR8Reslitthepr(nolshtth(thetoUBIOBIwaeywttblt;LhipestebeiUapthOfec-:n-lengtobyrt-beKBheonofndble:ie-To disarm her tho man dexterouslydiverted her attention by asking her to get him some article. The Bheriff, however, seems not to have apprehended much danger, and made no provision to resist any contemplated violence. The prisoner was lodged in the jail, in the custody of the jailer, while thesheriff and his deputies repaired to their homes in distant parts of the city. During all the early part of the evening the mob epirit was accumulating momentum. Between 2 and3 o’clock the mcb, numbering about16 masked map, came and demanded admittance to the jail. The jailer was called up and the keys demanded, but they were informed that the keys.were in the possesion of tho sheriff.
