Previous to liis expose of our religious and political relations to slavery, we had fancied ourselves theoretically and practically anti* slavery, but before he left our loud professions were sadly belied. There were those who are ecclesiastically affiliated to the ‘ institution” that sought to shield themselves and the Church by raising the cry of “nigger1* and “infidel. The people would hear in spiteof these gratuitous efforts, and, to use a homely expression, they licked their lips for more of the same sort.
