Calvin Cross, a member of the bar of Van Bureti county, departed this life at South llavcu on Tuesday, the 20th day of November, 181M, it the ripe age of seventy-seven years; and Whereas, Our brother in the profession was one of the pioneers of our eoutity, coining to Michigan at an early period in the state’s history from the state of New York and engaging for a number of years in the more humble pursuits of agriculture; andWhereas, Fie %va§ endowed by nature with a rugged common sense, a keen perception, and a versatility of mental powers so necessary to the successful lawyer and advocate; andW hereas, These qualities soon be-came apparent to and ho impressed themselves upon his neighbors anil townsmen that he was called upon and entrusted by them with the manage- j nieut and conduct of their minor litiga lions in justice courts; andWhereas, His assiduity, energy, zeal, natural gifts and steady advancement in knowledge of the principles of law so challenged the public attention that liis Held of usefulness gradually broad etied in this line, and the demand for hi- services so Increased that he found it necessary to apply for admission to the bar, in order that lie might extend his practice to the higher courts; and his examination, based as it was upon bis natural talents, his self-imposed labors as a student of the law and his experience in his forensic encounters and combats in just ice courts, was so creditable that lie wa« admitted to practice his profession in this court ; therefore /frfo/tvrf.
