DItnWNRD.Last Saturday afternoon, about 4 o’clock, tll« cry,was circulated in town that two boys bad broken through the ice in the riyef near the school house, and were drowning. Quite a number immediately started for the pi ace * among whom was a News reporter. When the spot was reached all that was visible of the accident was a hole through the ice about six feet square, and a boy’s cap floating on the water Mr. Dean, wholives near th6 scene of the accident, said that he saw Clarence Melindv and Eddie Fowler, two boys about twelve years of age, skating on ttafe ice. Suddenly Clarence Melindvbroke through, and in trying to help him out the Fowler boy also fell in. Mr. Dean immediately ran to do what he ceuld for them, in, the mean time shouting for help. lie succeeded, by laying down on the ico, in getting hold of the hoys, and was working towards the shore with them, when Mrs. Fowler came running down the hank, and with a mother's love uppermost in her heart, went bill on the ice to t ry and save her child. Hut she broke through, and in the confusion of trying to rave aii three Mr. Dean lost his hold on t he hoys, who sank lo raise 110 more. lie succeeded m getting Mrs. Fowler out, inn, mat was all he could do. When Lite hoys first broke through Mr. liaudall Parsons, who lives near the river on the ot iter side, came to their help, but got into the water, and came very near drowning.
