By DICK PUHR WEEKEND MORSELS WHILE PREDICTING BOTH Missouri and Kansas will defeat Alabama and Penn State respectively in the Gator Bowl and Orange Bowl. After Bill Flamank hit on 17 of 20 shots in leading Raytown South past Oak Park, 64-54, in the North Kansas hind tournament, Hornet cage coach Charles Cottingham said; “If any of our kids ever made 17 out of 20 we would have a plaque made for him and install it in the center of the court.” _ Leftover from the area football season: CONSIDERING ROCKHURST HAD TIED SOUTHWEST, 7-7 which went on to amass an 8-0-2 record, and handed perennially Kansas City, Kan., power Ward its only loss, Truman’s 26-14 victory over the Hawklets ranks as the No. 1 upset of the past season. The victory is even more notable when one considers that was the only game the Patriots won . Park Hill may not have the best basketball team around, but its uniforms and those of its cheerleaders are the most original and colorful I’ve seen in a while _ . Honorable mentions included Lee’s Summit’s Jim West in 4-A and Grain Valley’s Nick McMillian in 1-A __ Each September Sports Illustrated predicts what will be the top 20 college’ football teams during the coming season. The magazine didn’t do very well this year. Eight teams the magazine felt would be among the nation’s top 20, Florida, Texas AM, Nebraska, UCLA, LSU, Miami of Florida, Indiana and Army, didn’t make United Press International’s final top 20. As a matter of fact Nebraska, Florida and Texas AM would not have made a top 40. Here is Sports Illustrated’s pre-season top 20 com pared to the a UPI rankings: 1. Ohio State 2, USC 3. Penn State 4, Georgia 5, Texas 6, Kansas 7, Tennessee 8. Notre Dame 9, Arkansas 10, Oklahoma 11, Purdue 12, Alabama 13. Oregon State 14, Florida State 15, Michigan 16. SMU 17. Missouri 18. (tie) Ohio U., Minnesota 20. (tie) Houston Stanford A MILER ON THE KANSAS TRACK TEAM, JIM Olson, has written and produced a record about this year’s football team entitled, “Hawk It to ’Em.” It’s sold more than 1,000 copies “Do you get nervous before an opening game,” a re porter asked Oklahoma City basketball coach Abe Lemons, “Naw,” he replied, “although I do notice that on a Wednesday before a Monday night opener my hands drip _ and my vision blurs... and when the phone rings I fall off my chair... and my appetite gets bad . . . But out side of that I don’t notice anything different.” In speaking about one of his rookies, San Diego coach Sid Gillman said, “He doesn’t know the meaning of the word fear.
