tfciiiOn Monday, November 24, Brown and James Bullis, both cowboys employed by Narcisse Narcelle, who has a ranch out near White Owl some SO miles from Sturgis, were butchering a beef. Brown was living “bach” on the Narcelle ranch with Jim Belcher, but Bullis had his home some distance away. After butchering the beef Brown, who seemed in a strangely ugly piood, gave his gun to Bullis, telling him to throw it awav, as he feared he would kill somebody if he kept it. The men had no quarrel, but Bullis, who did not like the look in Brown’s eye, took the weapon and threw it into a water-hole.Brown then went away, but later in the day he returned and. coming to the door of the ranch house, in a wild aud excited manner declared to Bullis that he was 'a second Tra cy.’ “I’m a second Harry Tracy,” he shouted, “and I guess I’ll cut your head olT aid use it for a football.Bullis was unarmed and altogether unprepared to defend himself against such an attack. Brown, like a madman, sprang upon him with a knife and in a few seconds Buless was stabbed several times. The weapon used was an ugly pocket knife with a blade nearly three inches long. Bullis was cut in the left side of the neck, this wound being nearly three inches in length; in the top or the head he received a gash of about the same length; another one fully as long was inflicted j on the back of the head, and a fourt h stab was made in the right side and was almost* four inches long. At this juncture Jim Belcher interfered and Brown, tuuning on him, struck him on the righ t side. of the head with a heavy teacuu and then, seizing a piece of broken grindstone, hurled it at Belcher, who escaped from the house and hid in the brush. After Brown had vented his fury upon the remaining dishes in the house he went away, but came back the next morning to see Bullis, who had been taken to the ranch of Patterson Bros., some distance from the Narcelle place. Belcher had summoned Dr. Mathias, who lives up on the Belle Fourche river and who dressed Bullis’ wounds. Bullis at that time was very weak and in a critical condition. Brown asked Bullis if he had any hard feelings against him, and his victim replied that he did not see how a man could feel any other way after the way he had been treated.Taking one of Narcelle’s horses, Brown rode to Pierre, a distance of 115 miles. .Thursday last it was learned that he did not make a stop in all the long ride.
