North Haven POST, Wednesday, December 11, 1974—21- DAMAGE LISTTo the Editor:I read the list of damage resulting-from vandalism at theeast and west campuses (POST, Dec. 4) with a growingfeeling of fearfulness.I am fearful because the list reads like the aftermath of ariot at a co-ed reformatory.I am fearful because damage like this occurs during school hours and goes undetected until later.I am fearful because much of this damage occurs in the lavatories and I wonder how many of our kids forsake the use of these facilities because of potential danger to themselveswhile this damage is being done by others.I respectfully submit that the cost of preventing this damage by adequate supervision will be more than met by the reduced cost of repairs and the benefits derived from a more stable learning and teaching environment.I suggest that our town officials, most particularly the Board of Education and the Police Commission, seek out the services of capable senior citizens, give them official status as members of the Police Dept., either as supernumeraries or auxiliaries, pay them an hourly rate commensurate with their duties (to be defined) and assign them to Orchard Hill Junior High as well as the east and west campuses.Let’s stop abdicating our responsibilities as adults and re-institute our position as parents and guardians of our children. Even dumps need supervision. Can we do less for our children?Respectfully, Charles N. Crawley80 Randall Dr.
