SGT. SHERMAN FIRST TO DIE IN JAPANESE WARThe war struck home in Dairy Area this week with the death of one man in. action in the bomb' mg of Hickam Field, Hawaii.Another man in Hawaii was un-reported after the raid.Others from ..his region were in the areas where heavy fighting has been in progress since Jap bomb' er$ spattered death over Honolulu Sunday at dawn.Sergeant Robert O. Sherman,7 Myrtle avenue, Middletown, was Middletown’s (and probably Orange County’s) first battle cas' ualty. The War Department notified his mother, Mrs. Ursula M. Sherman, a widow, Monday night that Sergeant Shermon had died ’O action during the bombing attack3 on Hickam Field. Oahu Island.The man temporarily unaccounted for was Private Charles H. Russell of Howells, stationed at Schofield Barracks, Honolulu. The War Department informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Russell that he “had not been immediately accounted for” after the Sunday air raids.Sergeant Sherman was with Headquarters, 18th Pursuit Squadron, Army Air Force. He was 24 He was bom in Middletown in 1917, was a basketball star at Middletown High School, served here with Battery D before enlisting ine-(Continued on page 13)
