The scholastic basketball season starts in earnest this week. Early season games are booked for all Main Line schools and the coaches will be trying out their various combina tions to see who will be the regulars when the league schedules get under way. Lower Merion played host to Coatesville last night in the big gym on Montgomery avenue. Coatesville plays a rugged type of game and probably represents the best in bas ketball in Chester County. The big floor at Lower Merion will be some thing new for them, however, and they will not offer the Maroon an at tack that will be terribly hard to combat. Next Tuesday Coach Ander son will take his boys to Pottstown to encounter a well-coached five that will give them plenty of trouble. All of the boys on the team, however, are well acquainted with the Pottstown gymnasium, having played there while members of the Junior High School team. The Bulldogs are handicapped for the present with the loss of “Abe” Ramsey, tall centerman, who is nurs ing a sprained ankle. “Abe’s” height is a tremendous asset to the team and his scoring ability will be sorely missed during the early part of the season. Sophomore George Paine, a youngster who has about earned the right to show himself in the lineup, is limping from a foot injury. This weakens the team’s reserve power, but Coach Anderson has a large squad of capable boys and should be able to find a winning combination in spite of the handicaps. Jefferson, Morris, Lentz, Beck and Hammond will be the starting five for the present. The Junior High opens the season this afternoon on the home floor with the fast West Philadelphia High reserve team. Dunlap and Jones from Merion, Everhart and Maxwell from Cynwyd, Dimidio from Nar berth, and Greene, Ryan and Farrell from Bryn Mawr, make up the pres ent varsity squad. The team is light, but fast and capable, and will give all-comers plenty of action. The Senior High will play in the Arena this year and also at the Palestra in two of their regularly scheduled games. Harvey Buck, former Maroon foot ball star, gets a nice break as Villa nova goes to Havana for a New Year's game against Auburn. Roger Hanger and Ray Stanley, two former Maroon stars, set the pace for Pennsylvania’s victory over Lafayette at the Palestra last Satur day night. The Red and Blue played a cautious game, content to work the ball in close for shots rather than take a chance on long spot shots. Hanger had four field goals, while Stanley had one with five fouls. The boys should look better with a few more games under the wire.
