LXx1, NO. 280 ( are DOYLESTOWN, TUESDA TUESDAY AFTERNOON, DECEMBER 10, 1957 1 Section — 10 — 10 Pages 5 Cents Copy Ivyland Man Year’s Outstanding Farmer The Central Bucks Junior Chamber of Commerce last night named Penrose Hallo well, 29, of Mearns Road, Ivyland, as their Outstand ing Young Farmer of the year. Hallowell, who rents and works 230 acres in vyland in addition to the 60-acre farm he owns near Ottsville, thus qualifies for the state and national competition. Each year Jaycee units all ov er the country select the man they consider the best qualified to represent their area in the state and national competition for the Outstanding Young Farm er award. This year’s state judging will be held in February and the nationals in Indianapolis later in the spring. Hallowell is president of the Bucks County Dairy Herd Improve ment Association, president of the District Interstate Milk Produ cers’ Corporation, a director of the Bucks County Holstein Club, over seer of the Edgewood Grange, a member of the executive commit tee of the Bucks County Extension Service. He is also an active member of the Horsham Friends Meeting and in the summer manages one of the teams in the Warminster Knee- Hi baseball League. Douglas Magill was chairman of the committee which selected Hall owell from among numerous other applicants. Another highlight of the meet ing last night at Conti Cross Keys was a talk by Chief War rant Officer Jack Tighe, USMC, on the history and development of the Toys For Tots movement, which annually at Christmas time collects damaged and dis carded toys and rehabilitates them for underprivileged chil dren. Tighe is heading up this year’s drive. He thanked the Jaycees for their contribution to the drive and praised Doylestown as one of the best collection areas. Toys For Tots was started ten years ago by three marines in Los Angeles. Last year 200 Marine Corps units collected over five million toys. The local unit at Willsow Grove NAS tried to cut back their collec tion activity last year but found it impossible to do so because of public interest in the drive. This the direction of Tighe has been the direction of Tighe has been working steadily since Nov. 7 when the collection boxes were set out. So far 60,000 toys have been collected but Tighe estimates that some 20,000 toys will have to be ‘pened over to the Salvation Army this year for repairs that his men will be unable to perform.
