Bread and Cheese Club.THE LEPER KINGThere are two main traps for careless players in the writing of novels of the Middle Ages. On the one hand, you can make an adolescent story of simple-hearted, chuckle-hcaded lay-figures—heroes, villains, fair ladies and priests— playing a series of period” scenes, and uttering a strange jargon to create the mediaeval atmosphere. On the other, you can write an ‘'adult” story in the modern manner, in which a few typically 20th century people find themselves strikingly cast in a world of superstitious barbarism and primitive passion, which both they and the author are engaged in “de-bunking,” in a more or less sympathetic manner. The author of The Leper King” has succeeded in avoiding both these errors. In his story of Jerusalem in the last days of the Crusading Kingdom, the characters are convincing both as adult human beings and as inhabitants of the 12th century world. Their faith and their problems are treated seriously: the description of the central figure, the heroic leper, King Baldwin IV, is very moving indeed, as we see him pass from black despair and bitterness at the horror of his fate to a splendid acceptance of his cross and heroic fulfilment of his task as king. The other figures in the story stand out clearly from their strange Latin - Oriental background—the sensual Princess Sybilla, pursuing her appetites regardless of human pity or reason; the upright, honest Ibelin and the weak but well-meaning Guy de Lusignan; the narrow, brainless and brutal Chatillon; the sage and cynical Saladin, ever troubled by the paradox of the Franks and their Faith. The web is well woven so as to illustrate both the splendour of the crusading idea and the folly and baseness which brought it to disaster . . . not by the will of God, but by the treason of men. Zofia Kossak is to be congratulated upon an excellent tragic drama, set in a period which provides an abundance of material for novelists which is lamentably neglected.—D.G.M.J.The Leper King. By Zofie Kouok. I Hutchinson and Co.)AUSTRALIA AND THE UNITED NATIONSThis is a very valuable and timely handbook on the origins, aims and work of the United Nations Organisation. The author, Patrick Hamilton, is a former Victorian Rhodes scholar, who has recently returned to Melbourne after teaching in Queensland. The book is a miniature cyclopaedia of information on U.N., concisely, methodically and attractively presented, with excellent diagrams and photographs. Of special importance is a section on Australian participation in world affairs. An excellent handbook for secondary schools.—J.G.M.Australia and H»* United Nation*.
