The Washington DemocratPage 5and painstaking in their w*rk. and the achool stood high in educational circles. Graduates from this institution were permitted to enter the big universities. In most schools they wer allowed to enter as Juniors, and it was an established feet that graduates of the Washington Academy had won this distinction by hard work. Among the early instructors, whose names stand out prominently, vee find the name of Gam Patterson, as teacher of German; later Margaret Doolittle, Julia Baldwin McKibben, Sarah Getty McC’.ean, Rev. Walker, and others. An article about the Academy cannot be finished without a mention of some of the graduates Students who attended at the time will never forget Charles Brown, and his debating ability. He is now. lr. Charles R Brown, Dean of Yale University, a man whose opinions are quoted all over the country; Clem Matehett, another brilliant debater, is a famous judge in Chicago; Charles Burroughs, of the class of 1894, promised to be one of Washington’s most fa mous men. and his death in Paris many years ago is still a matter of sorrow' with Washington people; C. W. McCleary, who became a missionary to Africa, was a graduate of the Academy.. Jessie Jeffrey, who is the highest paid woman teacher in the St. Louis Mo., schools, is another, and so the list goes on and on. One name stands out prominently in the story of this school, and that was the lovable, irrepressible “Mose” McJunkin. He was christened Howard, but. to the day of his death he w'as known as “Mose,” although he became a Presbyterian minister. His pranks have been handed down, to the youngsters of today, who have enjoyed them almost as much as the participants. Mose and Dave McKee were up to all kinds of mischief, to get ahead of Dave’s father, but they knew all the time that the Professor was enjoying it as much as they. These men and women have held the office of president of the Academy: Professor McKee, Rev. W. P.Johnson, Miss Martha Rudd. J. T. Matthews, Rev. W. C. Allen. C M. Grumbling, C. S. Dodds, a ml R. D Daugherty and Nora Corette. It is to be hoped that some time in the future the Academy graduates may have a “Home Coming” or reunion. It has been years since such a gathering has been held, and it wrould undoubtedly be a wonderful success.ORIGINAL NOTICK.In the District Court of Washington County, Iowa.Daniel Leichty and Eva Leiehty,Paintiffs.Cleary.
