Their success last night foretold to a large extent the success of the entire season. It was the crowning event of months, even years, of expectation and was the occasion when the fondest hopes of femininity were realised. The debutantes, as they always are in Baltimore society, were the belles and the persons of most Importance and Interest. The men were mere accessories, and thegirls of last year, the girls of several seasons, the mothers and grown up aunts were an effective background that brought outmore pointedly the beauty of the “buds. At 11 o'clock the german was at its height. The ballroom was a scene of brilliant beauty seldom equaled. Mingling with men In their sober costumes were the the beautifully dressed women, gliding In and out In the graceful figures of the cotillon. On the steps of the stage and on the divans along the walls were the chaperons looking with Interest at the scene that revived memories of their first ball and keeping a watchful eye on the success of their daughters or protegees.LIKE THOPIIIES ON THE WALL.The decorations of the hall were exquisite. Across the sides were tastefully draped thick ropes of stullx. As the debutantes laden with flowers entered the room they placed their bouquets In the loops and kept only the one particular bouquet that meant more pe^aiM* from a sentimental point of vi'- From the cell-i(188 N EL Li r, IV S DULANYings were festooued long loops of smilax end clustered on tin walls between the massive brass candelabra were big knots of the green vine. When all the debutantes had arrived Itlooked that the big ropes of smllnx would break, so heavily laden were they with flowers. It seemed as If each debutante carried more flowers than the last. The quantity of flowers was! perhaps larger than at any previous german, and the debutante# as they walked across the floor from thedressing rooms were almost bidden by fragrant blossom*. At the back of the ballroom through a vista were seen tbe tablesdecorated wdth American Beauty roses and shaded lights, where at midnight, when the dancing ceased, a collation wa« served.Tbe guests were late In arriving. A number of large dinners were given before the german. After three preliminary dancesthe german was led by Mr. R. Brooke Hopkins, one of the governors of the club. The musicians were seated In the balcony, which was draped with smilax. GREINERlovernor Warfield and his two charming augbters were present All of the girlsre noted for beauty and charm. It wa?* aid last season that this year’s “buds could surpass In looks tbe debutante* of ast years, and, Judging from the charm rjg appearance they presented last night he prediction has been more tbau fulfilled lid beaux who have become almost institu-lons In society declared that tbe girla were he prettiest and most fascinating they ad known since they were boys. And their gowns were marvels of tow-iness. The deb***-*-., wore white, asMI88 HELEN WHELANthey always dq at the first german. The styles this year seem to suit ao well the dmple, unaffected manner that is supposed l»e characteristic of s debutante. In the lodlfled empire, with the princess effectt the waist Hue, and the girdle caught up high at tbe back, with long, sloping shoulder effects, the govrna were all similar In a way and yet distinctive as suited eachstyle. A return to tha becoming hair or namenta of wreath* and clusters of ribbonla evident. Tbe older girls and young matrons wore ostrich plumes trimmed In iridescent beads and spangles In the same or contrasting shades In their balr.Tbe gowns worn were In shades notice ably pastel. Vivid tints were shunned and soft, clinging liberty eatta crepe, radium and chiffon were the favorite mate rials. On most of the gown* the trim mings were In the same shades or in one contrasting tone, and In no Instance were the gowne In more than two tone*. The varicolored costumes of eeasoos past have disappeared. Quantities of gold, sliver and crystal embroidery were used and were becoming with their shimmering effecta.
