Pepperdine handed the Kent State basketball team its second defeat of the season Monday night, holding off a late rally to win 84-80. High point man of the game was Kent’s Charley Boykin who dumped in 12 field goals and seven free throws for 31 points. Bobby Sims and Bobby Blue led the Waves with 24 and 20 points respectively. Connecting on 19 of 38 field goal attempts in the first half, the Flashes held on to a 42-40 in termission lead. However, Pepperdine came back in the second half and, shooting a phenomenal 53 per cent, took a com manding lead late in the game. With slightly more than two min utes gone in the second half, Blue put the Waves ahead, 46-45, on a jump shot. They never relinquished the lead. Trailing by as much as 11 points at one time, the Flashes came back in the closing minutes to close the gap to a point, 81-80. Sterling For bes, Pepperdine’s All-American can didate, scored two free throws after the final buzzer had sounded to close out the scoring. Chester Thomas was the second leading Kent scorer with 19 points on eight field goals and three foul shots. Jim Maddox scored 11 points, Denny Bayer and Jack Moore six each, Paul Walker five and Frank Turley two. For Pepperdine, Forbes sank 16 points, Rich Buckelew 11, Rex Hugh es nine and Tim Tift four. Saturday night the Flashes enter ‘tain California Poly in an 8:15 game. There will be no preliminary. _ Last year Kent downed Poly 80- 56. The California team ran up a 16 won, eight lost record last year.
